Introduction to CBD

It’s likely you’ve heard about CBD or cannabidiol lately and you’re looking to find more information about what CBD is, how CBD oil works and what it can help treat. On our beginners guide to CBD, we’ve gathered some helpful information to get you familiar with CBD oil, and provide answers to frequently asked cannabidiol questions.

What Is CBD Oil?

Cannabidiol, better known as CBD oil, is a natural compound that has some unique capabilities, due to its interaction with our body. What makes CBD so accessible as a therapeutic product are its non-psychotropic characteristics (which produce altered perception and mood modification), and its excellent safety profile by being virtually THC-free as is common with marijuana. Δ-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol, commonly known as THC, is the most important psychoactive component of the cannabis plant and is abundant in varieties classified precisely as psychoactive.
Hemp is a type of Cannabis sativa that has been developed to contain high levels of CBD and has been used for thousands of years as a commercial and medical treatment. Ancient cultures introduced this plant as a remedy for a wide variety of conditions; and the fibrous stems were, and still are, used to make paper, fabrics and other biodegradable materials. The seeds are also used as a food source, or for animal feed, thanks to their high content of unsaturated fatty acids (omega-3 and omega-6). The unique cannabinoid ratio of hemp is ideal for extracting CBD. The extracted cannabidiol is used to produce products such as CBD oils, lotions, tinctures, capsules, supplements and more. But hemp, and the rest of the Cannabis sativa species, don’t just contain cannabinoids. Their chemical structure also harbors a variety of terpenes and flavonoids. Together, these sophisticated elements offer a range of effects, as well as benefiting from a phenomenon called the entourage effect.

The Difference Between CBD Oil And Hemp Oil

Both oils are often confused because they both come from the same plant: hemp. However, these oils are made using different parts, resulting in products with very different uses. CBD is extracted from the leaves, stems and flowers using state-of-the-art machinery, before being mixed with a carrier oil (usually olive oil) and bottled. On the other hand, hemp oil is made from the seeds of the hemp plant, which are cold-pressed to collect the result. These seeds are free of CBD, and therefore do not have the same therapeutic value as products containing CBD.

The Use Of CBD Oil

The cannabis plant was introduced thousands of years ago, and used by many cultures around the world for various purposes, including medicine. This plant contains active principles, called Cannabinoids and the human organism has many types of cells with specific sites where these active principles are attached, the Phytocannabinoids. The most common, and of which we have more information are the THC, the CBD, CBG, CBN and some more. Since 2013, the service of the National Institutes of Health (PubMed) has included in its index more than 1,100 studies on CBD oil, concluding that cannabidiol does not produce a psychoactive effect, but can actually be effective in counteracting the psychoactivity of THC.
